Step 1 - Preparing the Timeline

Let's begin by selecting a clip or image in the FCPX media library and dragging it to the timeline. Once you have your media selected your desired media, go to the FCPX titles library and search for FCPX Overlay Lens Dirt 6K. Choose the preset that matches the resolution of your project and drag it above your media in the timeline and make it the same length. For this example we will be using the Dark Overlay-HD preset.

Step 2 - Customizing Layout

Now, that we have our timeline setup, let’s customize the layout of our dirt. Select the title layer and go to the Inspector window. The sample slider allows you search for a frame of dirt that best suits the style you are want to emphasize. If you would like to change what side of your screen the dirt is on, you can check the Flip vertical or horizontal checkboxes. Opacity will let you control how visible you want your overlay to show up on your footage.

Step 3 - Enhancement Controls

Once you have done the ground work, you can now begin to really make this overlay your own with the Enhancement Controls. The Sharpness slider controls how much definition the particles will have. Blur lets you give your dirt an out of focus look. Brightness and Contrast adjust how bright or dark you want your overlay to come off. Clicking the box next to threshold will give your overlay a more contrasted, defined look. You can control the amount, smoothness and color of your threshold allowing you to really make your overlay stand out. By clicking the drop down arrow to the left of Threshold Color you can adjust the Reds, Greens an Blues of your threshold. You can also change the color by clicking the down arrow to the right. If you need a Vignette click the box next to “Vignette” to enable it. Enabling it will give you the ability to adjust the size, falloff, darken, or blur amount. Falloff allows you decide how defined you want the edges of your Vignette to appear. By using the darken slider you will be controlling how bright you want your Vignette.

Final Touches

Now, for some Final Touches. Located underneath color controls is Chromatic Aberration and Exposure. The Chromatic Aberration slider allows you adjust the lens focus on your overlay. Exposure will control the overall brightness of your entire overlay enhancements.
