ProBlend: Volume 2 Tutorial for Final Cut Pro

Learn how to create and customize your very own multiple exposure effects with the ProBlend: Volume 2.
Professional - Stylized Effects for Final Cut Pro X

STEP 1 - Preparing The Timeline

Before you drag any media into your timeline make sure that the media you choose is high quality. It also helps if your media has a range of strong values such as highlights and shadows. Now Let’s begin by selecting our footage from the FCPX media library and dragging it to the timeline. If you want to use a backdrop make sure that it is underneath all the media you will be using. Locate ProBlend Volume 2 in the effects library. Browse through the different types of presets. For this example we will be covering the Style 2 - Triple Exposure Linear effect. Click and drag the effect onto the media you want blended. Then go to the Inspector Window.

STEP 2 - Source Controls

Let’s start by filling our drop zones so you can a better idea of the changes you are making. Go down to the Drop Zone Inner Section. Click the inner drop zone icon. Once selected it will be highlighted blue. Locate the media you want shown in the drop zone. Select your media. Then click the apply clip button located in lower right corner of the viewer window. Repeat these same steps for the Drop Zone outer section. Now that we have are drop zones filled go up to the Source Controls section. Begin adjusting the position, rotation and scale of your media. Next adjust the levels, Click the drop down arrow to view the black, white and bias sliders. These sliders will control the translucent areas of the key. Raise the black slider to make translucent areas more translucent. Lower the white slider to make the translucent areas more solid. Dragging the bias slider to the right will erode the translucent regions of the key, While dragging the slider left will make the translucent regions of the key more solid. After adjusting the levels move on to the luma rolloff slider. The Luma Rolloff Slider controls the softness of the matte around the edges in the regions that are affected most by the luma control. Decreasing the luma rolloff value will increase edge softness. Increasing the value will sharpen the edges of the matte making them more abrupt. Underneath is the shrink and expand slider which will manipulate the contrast of the matte to affect matte translucence and matte size simultaneously. Drag the slider left to make translucent regions more translucent while simultaneously shrinking the matte. Drag the slider right to make translucent regions more solid while simultaneously expanding the matte. After making adjusting the shrink and expand slider continue adjusting the soften and erode slider. The soften slider will blur the keyed matt and feather the edges by a uniform amount. Moving the Erode slider to the right will increase the edge transparency from the outer edge of the matte progressively farther into the interior of the keyed matte. Next go on to adjusting the contrast and pivot slider. The pivot slider sets the point around which the contrast is adjusted. Now select a color for the shadows, mid-tones and highlights. After that adjust the overlay opacity, overlay saturation and overlay blend mode.

STEP 3 - Mask Controls

Once you have finished making your adjustments in the source controls section move down to the Mask Controls section. Start by choosing a blend mode then adjust the opacity, saturation and gradient bar. Click the drop down arrow next to gradient bar to reveal more customization options. You can change the color of the gradient by selecting one of the colored boxes. After choosing a color you have an interpolation and location slider. The location slider will allow you to control the coverage of each color that is present in your mask. Next you have the option of changing the type of your color between linear and radial. The linear option will make a line out of the colors you have chosen. The Radial option will make a circle out of your colors. After choosing a type you can keyframe where the color type starts and ends.
