ProBlur Tutorial for Final Cut Pro X

Learn how to control and customize professional blur techniques with the ProBlur Lesson.
Professional - Focus Tools for Final Cut Pro X

Step 1 - Preparing the Timeline

Let’s begin by selecting a clip or image in the FCPX media library and dragging it to the timeline. Once, you have your image in the timeline, go to the FCPX effects library to locate the ProMotion presets. Scan through the blur shapes and select the one that best matches the look you want. Then, drag and drop the effect onto your media in the Final Cut Pro X timeline. For this example we will use the 8 point rectangle blur preset.

Step 2 - Positioning the Mask

Once you have the timeline in place, let’s position and shape the mask. Select the media layer in the timeline and go to the viewer window. Right now, the box indicates the area of the image that is blurred, but we can invert that later. Use the center point to move the position of the entire box. Then use the arrows to scale the box horizontally and vertically. Next, use the handle attached to the center point to rotate the entire mask. Finally, drag and click the outside control points to fine tune the shape of the blur area.

Step 3 - Customizing the Mask

Now that we have our mask setup, let’s customize the look of it. Go to the Inspector window. Check the Show Background box to see the entire image. If you want to blur the outside of the mask instead, you can check the invert mask box. Unchecking the Enable Mask box will blur the entire image evenly. Next, go to the bottom of the parameters and use the Soften Mask Edges and Mask Roundness sliders to make the edges of the mask less noticeable.

Final Touches

Now for some Final Touches. Let’s make a few more changes to fine tune the look of our blur effect. Change the Blur Type and Color Style to your liking. The Blur types include different styles and strengths of blur.
