Step 1 - Preparing the Timeline

Let's begin by selecting a clip or image in the FCPX media library and dragging it to the timeline. Then, scan through the ProDefocus presets in FCPX effects library. If you scrub the cursor over the thumbnail, you can preview each preset in real time. Select the effect that best matches the look you want. Then, drag and drop the preset on top of your clip in the timeline. For this example, we are going to use the “5 blade aperture - defocus blur” preset.

Step 2 - Customizing the Defocus

Now, let’s customize the defocus look. Select your media in the timeline and go to the Inspector window. Use Effect Opacity slider to adjust the visibility of the blur layer. Next, set the amount slider to control the strength of the defocus. Then, use the rotation parameter to set the angle of the Aperture blades.

Final Touches

Now for some Final Touches. Let’s animate the blur amount to give the illusion that we are racking focus. Move the playhead to the front of your clip in the timeline. Then, set the blur amount to its starting value and set a keyframe on the parameter. Move the playhead to the end of the clip. Then adjust the blur amount to its final value. Since we have already applied a key frame to this parameter, it will auto key frame any changes we make to it.
