Step 1 - Preparing the Timeline

Let’s begin by selecting our background video or image in the FCPX media library and dragging it to the timeline. If you don’t have your own media, you can use one of the 12 backdrops that come with the plugin. Now, let’s go to the FCPX titles library to locate the ProKaraoke presets. Browse through the 90 text presets. Then, drag and drop the one you like above your media or backdrop in the timeline. Make it the same length as your background.

Step 2 - Customizing the Text

Now that we have our timeline setup, let’s customize the look of our letters. Select the title layer in the timeline. Go to the text tab of the Inspector window. Type out a line of lyrics from your song and choose the font you would like to use. Now, click on the title tab of the Inspector window. Go to the Animate To section of the Inspector window. Use the Text Size, Color, Opacity, and Width controls to adjust the look of the text that has already been sung. Repeat this step with the Animate From section to customize the look of the unread text.

Step 3 - Animating the Lyrics

Now that we have our text looking the way we want it, it’s time to keyframe the Text Sung slider to animate the lyrics. Move the playhead to the front of your title layer and go to the Text Sung slider in the Inspector. Set the value to 0 percent and place a keyframe on the parameter. Next, go back to the timeline and scrub to the place right after the first word is sung. Then, adjust the Text Sung slider to highlight this word as read. Since we have already set a keyframe on this parameter, FCPX will automatically set another one for any changes that we make. Repeat this step with every word that follows. If you would like to words to be revealed syllable by syllable, you can change the animate type from word to character.

Final Touches

Now for some Final Touches. If you would like to add a bouncing ball or png above your letters you can go to the bouncing objects section in the titles library. Choose the object and number of words for your line of lyrics and place it above the text layer in the timeline. Make it the same length. Select the bouncing object layer in the timeline and go to the viewer window. Use the on-screen controls to adjust the peak and floor of each bounce so that it lines up with each word. Then, go to the Inspector window. Use the Object controls to adjust the scale, opacity, color and outline of the bouncing object. Finally, keyframe the object location slider just as we did the text sung slider, so that the object bounces on top of each word as it is sung.
