ProMatte Tutorial for Final Cut Pro X

Learn how to make masks out of your logo and images with the ProMatte Lesson.

Step 1 - Preparing the Timeline

Let’s begin by selecting a video clip or image from the FCPX media library and dragging it to the timeline. Once, you have your video in place, go to the FCPX effects library to locate the ProMatte presets. Choose between an Alpha or Luma Matte and drag the effect onto of your clip in the Final Cut Pro X timeline. For this example, we will use a Luma Matte. Next, go to FCPX media library and select a P.N.G. with a transparent background into the timeline. Drag the image into the timeline beneath the video layer. Select your original media layer and go to the Inspector window. Click on the drop zone placeholder. Then select the PNG image in the timeline, and click the blue "Apply Clip" button in the FCPX Viewer window. Once the logo is in the drop zone, you can discard the image from the timeline.

Step 2 - Positioning the Matte

Now that we have our Matte setup, let’s adjust the orientation. Select the matte layer in the timeline and go to the Viewer window. Click and drag the center on-screen control point to position your logo. Then use the outer circle to adjust the size of it. Finally, use the arrow controls in the bottom right to pivot your logo along the x and y axis. and use the center handle to rotate it along the z axis.

Step 3 - Customizing the Animation

Once you have your logo situated. It’s time to setup the animation. Use the Zoom Distance slider adjust how far you want the logo to zoom in. Then use the Zoom Speed drop down menu to choose the curvature of the animation.

Final Touches

Now for some Final Touches. Let’s add a background to our scene. Select a video clip or image from the FCPX media library and dragging it to the timeline under your matte layer and make it the same length.
