ProRack Tutorial for Final Cut Pro

Learn how to create a contemporary title sequence by racking focus between your image and text with the ProRack Lesson.

Step 1 - Setting up the Text

We will start our project by dragging a “ ProRack title” to the storyline above our footage. Then scale the adjustment layer to the desired length. For this example, we will use the “fade in all” preset and adjust the clip to 5 seconds long. Select the adjustment layer in the timeline and place the playhead in the center. Now, you will want to alter the text by double clicking the “text here” placeholder in the FCPX viewer window. Now replace it with your own title. By selecting the “Text” tab above the control panel, you can access the controls to change the color, font and size of your title.

Step 2 - Racking Focus Settings

Now its time to edit our focus settings. You will need to click on the “Title” tab in the inspector window to see these parameters. Using the “Rack Focus” In and Out sliders, you can adjust the speed in which your title goes in and out of focus. The “Rack Focus” In slider measures the amount of time from the beginning of the title that the animation will last, while the “Rack Focus” Out slider measures the amount of time from the end of the title. For this example, we want the text to reveal itself fast but blur out slowly, so we will set the Rack Focus In to 15 and the Out to 15. At any point you can drag your play-head back and forth to review the animation you have created.

Step 3 - Combining ProRack

Now we are going to repeat these steps three times to create a ProRack title sequence. In this example, we will drag three of the “fade in all” presets onto the timeline and stack them over our each other. Now, we are going to stagger the title layers so that each one starts 2 seconds after the one below it in the timeline.

Final Touches

Now for some Final Touches. Increasing the “Distance Between Objects” can add depth to the scene by adjusting the background blur and z position of the title. Using the “Lens Breathing Amount” slider, you can imitate certain types of lenses by adding a slight zoom to the focus racking animation.
