Step 1 - Preparing the Timeline

Let's begin by dragging two clips from the media library into the timeline. Click and drag to trim the end of the first clip and the beginning of the second clip, so that the transition has video to overlap. Now, scan through the ProTear presets inside the transitions library. Drag one of the transitions between two clips. And scale it to the desired length.

Step 2 - Customizing the Tear

Now, let’s customize the look of our ProTear transition. Place the playhead in the center of the transition and select it in the timeline. Go to the FCPX Inspector window. Use the Master Controls to adjust the angle, position and shadow of the entire seam. Then, go to the Tear Controls to manipulate the individual panels. Next, use the Angle and Rotation controls to change the direction that each panel curls and flies off the screen. Adjust the radius amount to manipulates the curvature of the peel. Then, set the start and end offset controls to change how long each panel will take to tear off. Now, use the Seam Controls to change the texture, width, and color of the tear. Finally, set the opacity, length, direction and blur of the page shadows.

Additional Information

Now, for some Additional Information. If you would like to make a series of tears where some of the strips remain on the screen, you can use one of the ProTear adjustment layers instead of a transition. This time you will want to place one of the video layers above the other, instead of side by side. Now, scan through the ProTear presets inside the titles library. Drag one of the titles above the two clips. And scale it to the desired length. Then select the adjustment layer in the timeline and customize the look of it, just as we did with the transition.
