ProEmitter Tutorial for Final Cut Pro X

Learn how to create a fully customizable particle emission in Final Cut Pro X with the ProEmitter Lesson.

Step 1 - Preparing the Timeline

Let's begin by selecting a video clip or image from the FCPX media library to use as our background and dragging it to the timeline. Once, you have your media in place, go to the FCPX titles library to locate the ProEmitter presets. Scan through the emitter effects and select the one that creates the look you want. Then, drag the adjustment layer above your clip in the Final Cut Pro X timeline. For this example we will use the Sphere, Random Fill, Orbit preset. Next, go to FCPX media library and select an image or video to emit. Drag the image into the timeline beneath the background media layer. Select the ProEmitter Adjustment layer and go to the Inspector window. Click on the drop zone placeholder. Then click on the image in the timeline and click the blue "Apply Clip" button in the FCPX Viewer window. Once the media is inside the drop zone, you can discard the image from the timeline.

Step 2 - Positioning the Emitter

Now that we have our timeline the way we want it, let’s setup the orientation of our Emitter. Select the ProEmitter layer in the timeline and go to the Viewer window. Click and drag the center on-screen control to position the swarm where you need it. Then use the arrow, hinge and arm controls to pivot the line along the x, y, and z axises.

Step 3 - Customizing the Emitter

Once you have the particles where you want them, it’s time to customize the emission settings. Go to Emitter Controls section of the Inspector. Use the radius sliders to adjust the spread of the emission area. Then use the Emission Range to control the direction of the particles will move. Next use Angle dial to adjust the rotation of the particles. If you want each particle to be facing a different direction, you can use the Angle Randomness slider. Use the Spin controls to adjust how much you want the particles to rotate as they more. For this example we want the bees to fly straight so we will turn the spin amount down. Now adjust the Birth Rate sliders to control how quickly you want the particles to appear. Then use the Life Sliders to adjust how long you want them to live before disappearing. Use the Speed controls to adjust how fast you want the particles to use. Finally, adjust the initial number slider. For this example, we want there to be bees on the screen when the video starts so we will turn the initial number up. Depending on your version of Final Cut, you may need to double click the refresh button at the top of the Inspector to re-render these changes in the viewer window.

Step 4 - Customizing the Orbit

Now it’s time to customize the Physics behind the movement of the particles. Go to the Physics Controls section of the Inspector. The orbit engine is designed to make the particles fly around an object. If you want to use an image as the center point, you check the “Show Attractor Point” button and fill the drop zone. Or you can leave it hidden. For this example we will have our bees fly around a Honey logo. Once you have your attraction point is setup, it’s time to adjust the orbit controls. Use the Strength slider to adjust the gravitational pull of the center point. Then use falloff rate and influence sliders to control how far away from the center point the gravity will reach.

Final Touches

Now for some Final Touches. Let’s set a few keyframes on the attraction point position to give it the illusion that it is moving outward towards the screen. Move the playhead to the first frame of your clip. Then go the Inspector window. Change the Z position to the starting value and set a keyframe. Now move the playhead to the end of the clip and change the value of the parameter. Because this value is different than the previous frame … It will auto-keyframe in Final Cut Pro X. Finally adjust the Angel of View and Depth of Field settings to give your replicator and even more 3D look.
