STEP 1 - Preparing the Timeline

  1. Let’s begin by selecting a clip or image from the FCPX Media library and dragging it to the timeline. If you decide to use a video hold a specific frame that you would like to apply the effect to.
  2. Then locate ProDepth in the FCPX effects library. Scan through the variety of ProDepth choices. For this example we will be using the Convex 8 Point option located in the Paths section.
  3. (on a still image) Drag and drop the effect directly on top of your media. Once your Timeline is set up go to the Inspector Window.

STEP 3 - Layer Controls

  1. Next we will begin setting up the layers. Start by checking each indicator box so that they are displayed You have three layers to adjust.
  2. Layer 3 is the furthest layer from the source while layer 1 will be the closest. When using the convex preset you will want layer 3 to be the smallest and layer 1 to be the largest.
  3. If you were using a concave preset you want layer 3 to be the largest and layer 1 to be the smallest. Each layer section has a position and scale slider so you can really focus on a specific point.
  4. Once you have your layers adjusted go to the Effect Controls section.

STEP 4 - Effect Controls

  1. Start by rounding and feathering the edges of your layers.
  2. After making those adjustments deselect all the indicator check boxes in each layer section.
  3. The Center and x or y rotation controls work best with outdoor landscape environments or large indoor spaces. For other types of media it is best to keep these adjustments at 0.
  4. Now move your playhead to the first frame of your media. Then adjust the distance slider. Move the distance slider to 50 percent just to get an idea of how your adjustments look.

Center point isn't aligned with the environment

This will happen when the center of the media isn't aligned with the environment view. You can adjust the center point with the center on-screen control,  or by adjusting the x and y center position under "Effect Controls" in the inspector window.

.

Pixel film studios image to separate product pages

I can't get the environment to move at all.

.

This is because the edit mode option is turned on. You can locate the edit mode checkbox at the top of the effect controls in the inspector window.

.

Pixel film studios image to separate product pages

I don't see any depth added to the photo/video.

.

To enhance depth, you have to raise the distance of the layers. To notice the effect you have to adjust to camera controls and see the environment in motion.
