Step 1 - Preparing the Timeline

Let's begin by selecting a clip in the FCPX media library and dragging it to the timeline. Once, you have your footage in the timeline, go to the FCPX titles library to locate the ProPanic presets. Scan through the panic types and select the one that best matches the look you want. Then, drag the adjustment layer above your footage on the Final Cut Pro X timeline and make it the same length as the clip.

Step 2 - Customizing the Panic

Now that our timeline is setup, let’s customize the look of our panic effect. Select the adjustment layer in the timeline. Then, go to Master Controls section of the Inspector window. Use the Ease In and Out checkboxes to choose if you want the panic to start and end right away or transition in and out. Scrub the timeline until you find a place where the echo effect is clearly visible Then go back to the Inspector window. Use the depth slider to make the echoed layer more or less in focus. Next use the edge softness, shrink or expand, and erode sliders to adjust the area of the image that is echoed. If you check the Invert button, the dark areas of your scene will be echoed instead of the bright areas. Finally, use the Effect Levels to adjust the exposure range that you want the echo to feed off of.

Step 3 - Customizing the Movement

Now let’s adjust the movement of the film. Use the Movement Controls section to adjust the strength, speed, and jitter of the camera shakes and angles. The stronger the movement; the more the film will separate from its echoed layer. For this example, we will turn the Horizontal movement and Rotation down and the Vertical position up to create a film projector look. You can click the randomize buttons to create new random paths.

Final Touches

Now for Some Final Touches. Let’s adjust a few more Effect Controls to fine tune our panic look. Check the Film Edge box to add the reel frame to your image. Use the Twist and Shake sliders to add a little more jerkiness and Motion Blur. Then adjust the bulge effects to warp and expand the surface of your film. You can use the on-screen controls to adjust these parameters. Finally, increase the zoom, prism, and waviness amounts to give your effect a digital distortion look.
