Learn how to create and customize your very own professional lower thirds with the Pro3rd: Sports Lesson.
Preparing The Timeline
Let’s begin by selecting our media from the FCPX Media library and dragging it to the timeline. Then locate Pro3rd Sports in the titles library. Browse through the lower third presets. For this example we will be using the style 7 aligned left preset. Drag and drop the preset over top of your media.
Select the preset adjustment layer and go to the Inspector Window. First you will notice an Editable checkbox. When selected you can then edit the text by double clicking the text in the viewer window. You will be notified in the viewer screen whenever this option is selected. Be sure to uncheck the editable checkbox before you render.
Master Controls
Let’s start by adjusting the position, angle and scale in the master controls section. You can adjust these controls in the inspector window or you can use the on-screen controls in the viewer window. To position the lower third, Click and drag the center control puck. Click and rotate the pin sticking out from the center control puck in a circular motion to adjust angle. Scale your lower thirds by clicking and dragging the outside of the circle.
Camera Controls
Once you have your lower third set go down to the Camera Controls section. First start by adjusting the Angle of view slider. Adjusting the angle of view slider will change the perspective of your text. Underneath you can adjust the camera slide which will move your text left of right after the third is fully animated.
Next begin adjusting the depth of field blur amount and depth of field focus offset sliders. The Depth of field blur amount controls the maximum amount of blur applied to out-of-focus objects. The depth of field focus offset slider sets the distance from the camera where objects are in perfect focus. After setting your depth of field go on to adjusting the camera offset rotation. Adjusting the Rotation X slider will rotate your text up and down. Adjusting the Rotation y slider will rotate your text forwards and backwards.
Overlay Controls
Next we will go cover the Overlay Controls. Begin by selecting a Front Flare type and Lens Flare Type. Underneath you have your flare settings. You can position the flare in the inspector window or you can position it in the viewer window using the on-screen controls. Click and drag the lowest control puck to position your flare 1 position.
The second control puck is to position your second flare. After positioning your flare, Select a front flare, back flare inner and outer color. Once you have your colors selected you can adjust the flare size, front flare size, and flare brightness. Next adjust the anamorphic width and height. Repeat these same steps for your Flare 2 settings.
Text Controls
Now that you have your overlay controls set you can continue on to the Text Controls section. Start by filling the main title and subtitle text boxes. After you can choose a font that fits the style of your project. Then adjust the main title size, main title tracking and main title slant. Repeat these same steps for the subtitle text.
Text Animation Controls
Next we will cover the Text Animation Controls. Each Intro and outro section will have the same controls. Let’s start at the top with the Main Title Intro Settings. Begin by selecting a title intro animation. You can then adjust the title intro duration and animation spread.
Then choose how your title intro will animate in. After you can choose you Intro animation direction. Lastly select a Title Intro Animation Curve. Think of this as the speed at which your animation occurs. Continue the same method for the rest of the Main Title and Subtitle animation controls.
BackDrop Options
Once you have the Text Animation controls set you can move down to the BackDrop Options section. Start by adjusting the back drop height, width and offset. The Back Drop X Offset adjusts the length of your backdrop. Next adjust the Back Drop Edge Roundness. Underneath is the Back Drop Solid Gradient. Click the drop down arrow to view the controls.
Select any of the colored squares on the bottom of the color bar. Once you have a colored square selected you can now change the color of the gradient layer. There are red, green, and blue sliders along with an opacity slider for each color option so you can get the exact color you want. Underneath you have an interpolation option and a location slider. There are three options interpolation options which you can choose from.
The Linear option creates a uniform distribution of opacity or color between the two colors you have chosen. The Continuous option Sets an adjustable rate of change between adjacent opacity or color. Lastly the Constant option Creates a constant color distribution from the color or opacity. You can then adjust the starting and ending position of your color alterations. Next you have the option of having a back drop outline. If you choose to have a back drop outline you can select a color and adjust the outlines width.
