Step 1 - Preparing the Timeline

Let’s start by dragging our media into our timeline. Then locate ProGrudge in the FCPX Titles library. ProGrudge presets all have the same controls and are self animating. Choose a preset and drag it above your media in the timeline. For this example will adjust the length of our preset to match the length of the media. Select the adjustment layer and go to the inspector window.

Step 2 - Effect Controls

First we will start by adjusting the color. For this example we will be choosing a darker color to match our footage. Then we will bring down the color intensity and saturation. Next adjust the contrast and contrast pivot sliders. We will be moving the contrast and contrast pivot up just a little bit. Underneath is the blend mode options. In this example we will be going with an overlay look. Choosing a blend mode is based on what style you are going for and also what works best with your footage. Once the color adjustments are made we will continue on with the vignette controls. Begin by adjusting opacity, scale, feather and falloff. For this example we are going for a dramatic look so will adjust bump up the vignette scale and vignette falloff. After you will be able to adjust the vignette color. We will continue to go with darker colors to match our overall color we selected earlier.

Final Touches

Now for some final touches. Lastly we will alter the dirt colors and dirt focus. Making subtle adjustments to the dirt will go a long way. For this is example we are going to adjust only Dirt two and Dirt four colors. After we will adjust the dirt two slider so it is out of focus and leave dirt 3 in focus. Doing this will add depth to our scene.
