FCPX Overlay: Duplicate Tutorial for Final Cut Pro X

Learn how to clone your original media source and modify it to blend over their media for fantastic new looks and styles with the FCPX Overlay: Duplicate Lesson.

Step 1 - Preparing the Timeline

Let’s begin by selecting a clip or image in the FCPX media library and dragging it to the timeline. In this example, We are going to use a video clip of a women outside. Once you have selected your desired media, go to the FCPX titles library to locate FCPX Overlay Duplicate presets. Scan through the presets. Select the one you like and drag it above your media in the timeline and make it the same length.

Step 2 - On Screen Controls

Now that you have everything set up, Select the title layer. After selecting the layer, a guide will show up in the Viewer window, giving you a visual representation of what you will be controlling. To move your guide click the middle circle and drag in any direction, This will allow you to move the guide anywhere on the screen. To rotate your guide click and drag the white ball at the end of the horizontal line. Adjusting the size of your guide is controlled by clicking and dragging the outside of the circle.

Step 3 - Clone Layer Controls

Once you have your guide in a area that best works for you, It is now time to adjust the clone layer. Go to the Clone Layer Controls section of the Inspector Window. Use the scale, rotation and position parameters to adjust the orientation of the cloned media. You can also use the on-screen controls in the Viewer window to make these same changes. The inner control puck can be used to position the clone layer. The handle attached to this point can be used to adjust the rotation. The outer control circle can be used to adjust the scale.

Step 4 - Effect Options

Once you have your clone layer where you want it, it’s time to stylize the look of it. Go to the Effect Options section of the Inspector window. The Clone layer opacity controls how faint or opaque you want your cloned media to appear. You can then choose scan through the blend modes in the drop down menu to find the one that best suits your projects needs. Next, use the Hue, Saturation and Value sliders to adjust the color of your cloned media. You can also use the on-screen guides in the Viewer window to make these same changes. The color gradient box in the guide interface will show you how your changes effecting the duplicated layer.

Final Touches

Now for some Final Touches. Let’s adjust the blur settings to further blend the clone layer into our image. The blur slider can be used control the strength of the blur applied to your cloned media. You can choose between directional or gaussian blur in the blur types drop down menu, or if you have no need for the blur option, you can select “none”. Once you have selected a blur type you have the freedom of adjusting its direction using the angle control.
