ProText: Hinge Tutorial for Final Cut Pro X

Learn how to create energetic, swinging typography without using keyframes with the ProText: Hinge Lesson.
Professional - Text Animation Titles for Final Cut Pro X

Step 1 - First Setting up the First Text

Let’s begin by going to the FCPX titles library to locate the ProText Hinge presets. Scan through the animations and select a reveal type. Drag and drop the preset you like into the timeline and set it to your desired length. Select the layer in timeline and go to the Inspector window. Check the “editable” box. This will disable the on-screen controls and allow you to select the text. Double click on the text in the viewer to bring up the text tab in the Inspector. Use this panel to add your text, and then customize its font, color size. Once you have your text setup, go back to the titles tab of the Inspector window and uncheck the “editable” box. Then, use the on-screen controls attached to the text to position, scale and rotate the text. The other set of controls are meant to adjust the layer below the text, but since this is our first layer, we can ignore those controls.

Step 2 - Setting up the Second Text

Now, it’s time to add more layers of text. Go to the titles library. Drag and drop another preset onto the timeline above the first one. Then, stagger the layers so that the first word is on the screen for a readable amount of time. Customize and position the text just as we did with the previous layer. Once you have the text setup, use the outside on-screen controls to adjust where you want the first line of text to animate out. Repeat this step with as many lines of text that you want.

Final Touches

Now for some Final Touches. If you want to add a backdrop image below the text that isn’t effected by the animation, you will have to compound all the text layers together first. Select all of the layers in the timeline. Then, control click on one of them and select “new compound clip.” Now you can drag and drop any photo or video below the compound clip and it won’t be effected by the layer above it.
