Step 1 - Preparing the Timeline

Let's begin by selecting a clip in the FCPX media library and dragging it to the timeline. Once, you have your footage in the timeline, go to the FCPX titles library to locate the ProTrails presets. Scan through the light types and select the one that best matches the look you want. Then, drag the adjustment layer above your footage on the Final Cut Pro X timeline and make it the same length as the clip.

Step 2 - Customizing the Trail

Now that our timeline is setup, let’s adjust the structure and color of our light trail. Select the title layer in the timeline. Go to the Light Controls section in the FCPX Inspector. Use the end point parameter to control the direction and length of the light trail. Depending on your version of Final Cut, you may need to double click the refresh button at the top of the Inspector to re-render these changes in the viewer window. Next, use the Life slider to adjust the falloff rate of the trail. Then use the scale and feather sliders to adjust the thickness of the line. Finally, use the color pallets to adjust the colors of the lights.

Positioning the Trail

Once you have the trail shaped the way you want it, it’s time to position it to where you need it. Use the Camera position and rotation to manipulate the orientation of the light trail. If you want to add some depth to light streak, increase the angle of view of the camera.

Final Touches

Now for some Final Touches. Let’s adjust a few more Effect Controls to fine tune our light trail’s look. Use the waviness or spiral controls to adjust the shape of the trail. Then adjust the glow controls to give our lights a radiant, soft look.
