Step 1 - Preparing the Timeline

Let’s begin by selecting our media from the FCPX media library. Then Locate ProGlare 5K Dirt in the FCPX Titles library. Browse through the ProGlare 5K Dirt presets. Click and drag the effect directly on top of your media. Select the adjustment layer and go to the Inspector Window.

Step 2 - Glare Controls

Let’s start by adjusting the glare position and glare size. You can also make those same adjustments in the viewer window. Position the glare by clicking and dragging the center control puck. Adjust glare size by clicking and dragging the outside of the circle. After making those changes you can then adjust the intensity, falloff and glow falloff sliders. When adjusting the falloff sliders you will see that when you move the sliders all the way to the left it will disperse more light at a longer distance. When moving the sliders to the right it will shorten up the light turning it into a  spotlight.

Step 4 - Dust Controls

Next we will start adjusting the Dust Controls. Begin by adjusting the Dust Sample slider. The Dust sample slider will cycle through different frames of dust so that you can get a different look every time. Underneath you can choose to flip the dust vertical or horizontal by selecting the designated checkboxes. Continue on by adjusting the dust scale, brightness, defocus and opacity sliders. After making those adjustments move on down to the Bokeh Controls and Dirt Controls section.

Step 5 - Bokeh Controls

The Bokeh Controls and Dirt Controls generally have the same slider controls and functions. In the Bokeh Controls section you have two extra sliders which are the gamma and noise amount sliders. The gamma slider brightens and darkens the areas of medium brightness on the bokehs, All while leaving the highlights and shadows untouched. This will avoid a washed out look for the bokehs. The noise amount slider simply controls the noise you want added to the bokeh’s. Once you have Bokeh Controls set go on to adjusting the Dirt Controls section.
